‘Maggie meets the fairies in the wood’, illustration by Arthur Hughes from Speaking Likenesses by Christina Rossetti (1874). The sense of focus is pretty amazing.

The Fairy Festival by Gustave Dore, French, 1832-1883. Image courtesy of Peter Nahum at Leicester Galleries, London, England.
Dore was a painter and book illustrator and known best for his images of horror. I have been looking for this painting for a long time and finally found the gentler side of the artist. It is almost impossible to believe this is a Dore.
